Autumn Update; fireworks, holiday traditions and festive food

Bringing you advice, support and, of course, the nutritious and delicious natural raw pet food to help your four legged friend stay happy and health this autumn.

Getting your pet through fireworks night

Loud bangs and strange lights in the sky can be very scary for your pets as they don’t know what they are. Even though there is a second lockdown, households may still celebrate Guy Faulks night by letting off fireworks so it’s best to be prepared by following these simple steps to help keep your pet calm and happy.

  • Provide a safe, comfortable space – whether it’s building a den under the stairs or placing a favourite blanket under the bed, provide your pet with a place they feel safe so they can escape there if the bangs get too much.

  • Stay calm – our pets are intuitive so if they see you panicky and afraid, they are likely to mimic your behaviour. So, try to stay as calm as possible, even if your pet is acting up – remember it’s just because they are scared.

  • Keep pets in after dark – Try to walk your dog before the sun sets to minimise the chances of fireworks going off in an unfamiliar place and entice reluctant cats back by shaking their favourite treats by the open door.

  • Calming supplements – we have a range of natural calming supplement for pets that may need a little extra help. You can shop online here.

Holiday Traditions To Look Out For

One of the best things about the festive season is getting the chance to decorate our homes with our favourite holiday ornaments and traditions! However, some of the decorations and food that we love can be dangerous for your pet so make sure to keep decorations and food firmly out of reach of your pet's paws (and mouth!). Below is a list of some of the most common festive items which pose a risk to your four legged friend. If you're in doubt about anything, always consult your vet.

Also keep an eye out for:

  • Seasonal plants and flowers such as mistletoe, poinsettia, holly and lilies.

  • Low hanging decorations and electrical wires for fairy lights.

  • Chocolate – the chemical theobromine found in chocolate is poisonous to cats and dogs

  • Onions – onions are found in lots of festive treats, like stuffing, which can cause anaemia in dogs so double check before sharing your Christmas day dinner.

  • Christmas puddings and mince pies – though delicious to us, these festive puds contain vine fruit which has been linked to causing kidney failure in dogs.

  • Cooked bones – while you may be tempted to share your festive feast with your pet, it is crucial that they're never fed cooked bones as they can cause internal damage.

Festive Food

Like us humans, it’s only natural for your pet’s diet to follow what’s available in the changing seasons. By feeding them in season foods, you’re giving them fresh, local produce that’s full of everything they need, just like they would eat in the wild. Right now, we recommend the following in-season foods:

  • Sprats – packed full of protein to look after your pets’ heart, skin and digestion, add sprats to a main meal or offer as a tasty treat.

  • Venison – this tasty meat is full of important nutrients, including vitamin B, zinc and iron to give your pet lots of energy and healthy organ function.

  • Game birds – birds such pheasants are bursting with nutrients and help the development of healthy tissues and muscles.
