Planning for Covid-19 inside Nurturing by Nature first started back in January when it was raised by our QMS manager within our weekly managers meeting. It would be fair to say that our QMS manger fully understood the potential risk that Covid-19 posed and it is from this guidance, that we began our contingency planning. This planning initially involved stock piling all the cleaning chemicals we use daily and increasing our stock of hand sanitising products.
In addition to our cleaning chemicals, we also looked at any potential supply lines that have links outside of the UK. This was necessary because while all of our raw pet food ingredients are sourced within the UK, some of our machine spares and packaging have origins within the EU or further afield.
So, in early February everyone was asking why we had so many bottles of floor cleaner in the office store cupboards and why chemical signs had been added to additional doors. Again, this was all way before the serious nature of Covid-19 was fully understood, and regular meetings were still happening, hands were being shaken and high fives were common place.
Through February and the early days of March, business continued as normal, production was being increased as per our business plan, our new dispatch facility was bedding in nicely and Nettie, our founder, was even starting to have some much-deserved days off from Westmoors.
Whilst the news was portraying Europe’s woes with this terrible pandemic, it felt like the UK was largely unaffected. We kept up our regular discussions with our suppliers and while all spoke of changes, they couldn’t see supply into us being affected.
During the week beginning 9th March, there was a clear change in the UK but whilst toilet rolls were in scarce supply, here at Nurturing by Nature we continued to produce our raw pet food diet as we have always done, with the exception of increasing production slightly to jam pack our freezers. It wasn’t until the following week that everything really changed.
Since Nurturing by Nature was first founded in the family Kitchen back in 2004, we have never seen a week like the week commencing 16th March. Every production and sales record we had was blown away and doubled. This was the week when we saw our busiest ever day in the shops, online and within our production facility.
It is at this point in our story that we must say a huge thank you to all of our teams within Nurturing by Nature - we were busy already but to double the intensity almost overnight is a huge task and we must pay testament to the whole team within the business. In one week alone we processed over 25,000kg of chicken along with 3,500kg of beef, 3,000kg of fish, 2,000kg of lamb and 1,000kg of venison. It was a crazy period of time and the one product we struggled to keep up with was one of our all-time favourites, chicken carcass.
With business as usual changing almost overnight, we are extremely proud of the performance of our teams and also our community. I think it would be fair to say that the UK faced an unprecedented change to our normal lives and the response to it here at Nurturing by Nature and our wider raw feeding community has been outstanding.
The story of Nurturing by Nature and what has been happening behind the scenes will follow in further blogs.
