The Carrot

The human anatomy is very different to the anatomy of our dogs and cats. They may share our homes, sit on our sofa & even share our bed but the truth is, these are learnt behaviours within our modern lives.

It sounds obvious to some & silly to others but our digestion systems work in very different ways. Our human digestion starts in our mouth, as soon as we start to chew our food we start to break it down. Our saliva contains enzymes. The saliva of your dog or cat is more of a lubricant to ease chunks of meat down into their stomachs.

It is common in our shops to hear our customers say, “My Dog doesn’t chew their food.” This is natural. In the wild the most vulnerable time for almost all animals is either whilst eating or whilst drinking. Even for the A-class predators. Their heads are down & when it comes to food they have something that all the other animals want. They hunt, catch, kill, eat. As a pack animal – The alpa pack leader will get all the good bits, the heart, liver & the prime muscle meats then they move away to rest, the remainder of the pack then get their opportunity to feast. In comparison, solitary animals such as the leopard or your domestic cat eat their meals in very different ways.

Feed your dog a whole carrot, let them play with it, chew it & eat it – for some puppies it’s even a good teething treat. The next day you’ll probably find small bits of carrot in their poo. On day two: Finely grate or blend a whole carrot – then feed it to your dog. From this you’ll not see any carrot pieces & all the important vitamins, (vitamin A, vitamin K potassium and vitamin B6.) are used up and hardly wasted at all.
